Skied a SW facing gully on Wheeler Peak. Max elevation of 12,000ft before skiing down. At the transition zone a pit was dug showing a 34" snow pack with approximately 16" of new snow, 10" of denser snow from a previous cycle (4 finger resistance) and 8" of frozen facets (single finger).
The snowpack felt stable with no noticeable layer collapses or fractures as we skied. Great first day of the year!
