Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

Newer snow from last few storm cycles plus wind loading have placed 60-100cm of cohesive and very soft snow over older persistent faceted layer on north aspects. Appears to be developing a more stable snowpack that is harder to trigger. More southern aspects have buried sun crust layer like concrete with variable amounts of new snow and wind load from 10 to 40cm, will set up in next few days with abundant sunshine in forecast. Best transition-season skiing on these north aspects, quite good. Evidence of cornice fragments still remain up high on slope with no obvious avalanche activity, so triggers will need to be significant.
